The course is currently only available to the South Yorkshire area.
The subject of Organ Donation is an emotive one for both families and those working in the field of intensive care. There are currently falling donor numbers which are partly attributable to improvements in medicine and road safety. The effect of this is that there is less exposure for Intensive Care staff who may rarely become involved in complex donor care.
Appropriate care of the brainstem dead patient is essential in order to optimise any potential organ donors. Appropriate management of the whole situation helps to meet the emotional needs of families in end of life care and is the best choice of treatment in end of life care.
The MPOD Course is unique and is the first Course of its type in the UK, it is held at the Montagu Clinical Simulation Centre. The environment allows the delegate to learn in a safe non threatening manner and covers all aspects of donor care that occur in Intensive Care. The course covers donor identification, management, brainstem death and family care using a variety of methods.
