Flu Pandemic Training

We are currently developing three courses targeting different staffing groups within the NHS in response to the current flu pandemic alert. These courses are targeted at ensuring Critical Care areas are prepared and address some of the issues of caring for Critical care patients outside of a Critical Care Unit.

All of the courses provide an overview of local and national strategies, new ways of working, implications on resources, care of a child on an adult ICU and infection control. Workstations will also be formulated so that staff can be introduced to PPE, ensuring the correct usage. Staff will also be given the opportunity to trial equipment that they may not be familiar with, such as single use ventilators. The third course provides all of the above for non-critical care staff, such as surgical staff nurses that may be redeployed into critical care areas in the event of a flu pandemic, providing them with an insight as to how their role may adapt.

Due to our service provision, these courses will be accessible to all NHS workers throughout the Yorkshire and Humber region free of charge therefore, in order to deliver standard practice throughout the region, we endeavour to initially train all key trainers with the expectation that information then cascades down to other staff.
